Repair or Replace - How We Decide

Not every windscreen damage requires a full replacement. Here’s a general guide to what can typically be repaired and what requires replacement.

Usually Repairable:

  • Chips smaller than a 10 cent coin
  • Single cracks shorter than 30cm
  • Damage not in the driver’s direct line of vision
  • Damage not at the edge of the windscreen
  • Clean breaks without significant splintering

Usually Require Replacement:

  • Cracks longer than 30cm or spreading across the windscreen
  • Chips or cracks directly in the driver’s line of vision
  • Damage at the edge of the windscreen affecting structural integrity
  • Multiple chips or cracks across the glass
  • Damage that has been left and allowed to spread significantly

When in doubt, bring it in. We’ll assess it honestly and tell you exactly what’s needed.

Common Windscreen Repair Questions

The size, location, and type of damage all determine whether a repair is suitable. As a general rule, chips smaller than a 10 cent coin and cracks shorter than 30cm can often be repaired, but we recommend bringing the vehicle in for an honest assessment before assuming either way.

A chip repair typically takes 30 to 45 minutes. The resin needs a short curing time before the vehicle can be driven, which is included in the overall appointment time.

A full windscreen replacement typically takes 1 to 2 hours. After fitting, the adhesive requires a curing period before the vehicle should be driven, we'll advise you on the specific timeframe when the job is complete.

A professional chip repair significantly reduces the visibility of the damage and prevents it from spreading, but in most cases a small mark will remain. The primary goal of a repair is to restore structural integrity and prevent further cracking.

Many comprehensive insurance policies cover windscreen repairs or replacement. We recommend checking your policy details with your insurer. In some cases windscreen cover is included without affecting your no claims bonus.

Yes, cracks or chips in the driver's direct line of vision are a WOF failure item. Damage at the edge of the windscreen that affects structural integrity can also result in a failure. We carry out repairs to meet WOF requirements.
